Economic Outlook in Seattle
The
people who live there call it The Emerald City. A sea level city built
on a series of hills, surrounded by water and nestled in great natural
beauty. Seattle is located in west central Washington between Puget
Sound and Lake Washington. To the west are the mountains of Olympic
National Park; to the east, the Cascade Range which includes Mount Rainier.
Scenic urban parks and picturesque boulevards ring the city. There are
three large lakes within the city boundaries. Two floating bridges connect
Seattle with the east side of Lake Washington. A state ferry system
connects the city with the Kitsap Peninsula and the islands in Puget
Sound, and commercial ferries link the city to Victoria, British Columbia,
and San Juan Islands. And tales of Seattle’s continuous rain are more
fiction than fact; the city’s average rainfall is less than that of
many East Coast cities. Seattle’s multicultrual population is estimated
at nearly 530,000. The metropolitan population is more than 3,200,000.
Seattle is
an important Pacific Coast seaport--U.S. gateway for trade with Asia--and
also the major northwest center of commerce and manufacturing. Leading
manufactures are aircraft and aerospace equipment and products related
to biotechnology. Seattle’s economy is impacted by computer software,
commercial fishing, shipyards, canneries, and tourism. The area is served
by the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, major railroads, and a
modern highway system.
Points
of interest include the Pike Place Market and the Pioneer Square nightlife
downtown; the Nippon Kan Theater, a national historic landmark; the
Museum of History and Industry and the Henry Art Gallery; the zoo and
aquarium; Discovery Park, site of the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural
Education Center; the Pacific Northwest Ballet and Repertory Theatre
Company, Center Playhouse, and the Space Needle with its revolving restaurant
and observation deck 600 feet above the city. For sports fans, the city
offers the Mariners major league baseball club, the Seahawks NFL football
team, and the Supersonics NBA basketball team.
The area
was occupied by Native Americans long before it was settled in 1851
on the present-day site of downtown. The city was named for Chief Sealth
of the Suquamish people who befriended the settlers. Rich timber resources
attracted pioneer Henry Yesler who built the area’s first steam-powered
sawmill in 1853. Transcontinental railroads and canals stimulated rapid
growth. In 1990 this city hosted the Goodwill Games. In 1993 it was
the site of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) annual meeting
of ministers.
