Economic Outlook in Richmond

The most recent indicators show that the Richmond area’s impressive unemployment rate of 3.5 was much below the national average of 6.0. Though total nonfarm employment was down slightly from a year earlier, it continued to be strong in wholesale / retail trade, services, and government--the three sectors which accounted for 70% of the area’s total jobs.

The Richmond metropolitan area is a major tobacco market, a major banking center, and the regional center of commerce, manufacturing, distribution, and high technologies. Tourism and government are also important to the area’s economy. Manufactures include tobacco products, paper goods, textiles, chemicals, printed materials, and processed foods. Richmond is home to such employers as Reynolds Metals Company, CSX railroad, and James River Corporation. The area is served by excellent road and rail systems, the Richmond International Airport, more than 100 motor freight companies, and the Port of Richmond on the James River.
