Economic Outlook in Nashville

In October of this year, Nashville’s impressive unemployment rate was 3.5, much below that of the state and national average. Total employment since June had improved by 5,300 jobs. Compared to a year ago, employment was down in the manufacturing and financial sectors, but job gains occurred in construction, mining, and government, as well as wholesale/retail trade and services, the two sectors which account for about 70% of total employment in the Nashville metro area.

In recent years, Nashville has been named one of the best places in the U.S. to work and live. It is recognized as one of the “Top Fiber Optic Cities,” one of America’s hottest cities for relocation and expansion, and one of the “50 Best Places to Earn and Save Money.” The area’s diverse economic base includes financial, health, and transportation services, tourism and entertainment, expanding international trade, advanced technologies, and such manufactures as automotive components, apparel, printed materials, and processed foods. Top employers include Nissan and General Motors. The area is a major transportation crossroads served by three major interstates, an international airport, an extensive rail system, more than 140 freight carriers, the UPS shipment and processing center, and river access to the Gulf of Mexico.
