Economic Outlook in Minneapolis
The
latest unemployment rate for the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area
is a healthy 3.6, surprisingly low compared to the national average
of 6.0. October employment was up 15,000 jobs since June. Most of this
growth occurred in the services and government sectors which, along
with manufacturing and wholesale/retail trade, accounted for 80% of
the total employment in the area.
Combined, Minneapolis and St. Paul are the commercial,
industrial, and transportation center of a rich and extensive agricultural
region. It is headquarters of four of the world’s largest milling
companies. The area’s diversified industries range from farm,
electrical, and transportation machinery to chemicals, electronics,
processed foods, and precision instruments. Recognized as one of the
nation’s most livable urban environments, it is served by the
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, five railroads, and excellent
road and water transport systems. State officials estimate that Minnesota
employment is expected to expand 1.5% annually over the next five years.
