Economic Outlook in Memphis

The nation’s slowdown in employment is reflected in the Memphis metropolitan area, with nonfarm employment idown about 2% from a year ago. The biggest drop occurred in manufacturing, construction & mining, and transportation & utilities. Modest declines in services and wholesale/retail trade, which account for 55% of the total Memphis area nonfarm jobs. No change in the financial sector. Government was the only sector in October to show a gain, up 8.500 jobs since July of this year. The Greater Memphis unemployment rate of 4.7 compares favorably with the nation’s 6.0.

Long an important transportation hub and the agricultural/commercial center of the Mississippi Delta, the Memphis metropolitan area has diversified its manufacturing output to include wood & paper products, electronics, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and food processing. It now appears that the best bet for new jobs in the near future may be in high-tech industries. Also key contributors to the Memphis economy are tourism and entertainment. Personal buying remains a positive economic indicator, where the median household income for the region is projected at $40,035. The area’s business community is served by the world’s largest air cargo airport, the nation’s third largest rail center, and fourth largest inland port--key factors that link Memphis to an expanding global as well as domestic marketplace.
