Economic Outlook in Lexington
Currently the economy in the Lexington metropolitan area is healthy
and moving in the right direction, with total nonfarm employment ahead
of the annual average and showing a pickup of nearly 6,000 new jobs
since August. Lexington is one of only 55 metro areas with an unemployment
rate under 3.5, and one of 106 metros with increased employment from
a year ago. November’s employment gains occurred in 5 out of 8
industrial sectors, including wholesale/retail trade, services, and
government which accounted for 71% of the total jobs.
Traditionally the Lexington
area economy has been based largely on horses and tobacco, but in recent
years it has become increasingly diverse in its products and services.
Not only is it the regional retail, financial, and manufacturing center,
but its manufactures range from computers and automobiles to electronics,
paper goods, and processed foods. Major employers include General Electric,
GTE, Lexmark International, Toyota, Trane, Valvoline, and the University
of Kentucky. Strategically located at the intersection of interstates
64 and 75, Lexington is served by excellent road and rail systems plus
the Blue Grass Airport.
