Economic Outlook in Kansas city

Even though total nonfarm employment for the Kansas City metropolitan area was down slightly from a year ago, the local economy picked up some 4,000 jobs. Twelve-month gains were reported for the manufacturing and wholesale/retail trade sectors. The area’s unemployment rate was somewhat higher than the Kansas and Missouri rates but considerably below the national average.

Located at the junction of the Missouri and Kansas rivers, which form a key distribution center for farm and dairy products, Kansas City has emerged as a major commercial and industrial hub for the region. Today its strongest economic asset is its diversity. Chief manufactures now range from chemicals and petroleum products to machinery, auto bodies, transportation equipment. The area has been praised by a Milken Institute study as “the best place in the Midwest for a small or mid-size business to develop and grow..” Kansas City has also been included on a Midwest list of top 20 cities for high-tech jobs compiled by the Corporate Technology Information Services. Factors which are attracting new high-tech jobs to the area are a well-educated workforce, centralized location, and advanced telecommunications infrastructure. The area’s business community is served by a major port plus excellent air, road, and rail systems.
