Economic outlook in Indianapolis
The Indianapolis unemployment rate of 4.5 compares favorably with Indiana’s
5.0 and the nation’s 6.0. Compared to a year ago, the metro area
experienced employment declines in manufacturing, services, and the
financial sector, while employment was up in wholesale/retail trade,
transportation and public utilities, and government which gained about
11,000 jobs since July.
This regional center of commerce, transportation,
and industry is recognized as the Crossroads of America, bisected by
more interstate highways than any other city. Area businesses are also
served by excellent rail and trucking systems and the Indianapolis International
Airport. Dramatic revitalization and business incentive programs continue
to attract new employment opportunities.
The area’s diversified manufactures range from chemicals and pharmaceuticals
to aircraft and automotive parts. Also important to its balanced economy
are agriculture, finance and insurance, sports, conventions and trade
shows, and tourism.
