Economic Outlook For Renters Of

Houston Apartments

Houston ApartmentsAnalysts were surprised in November to hear the Labor Department announce that the nation’s unemployment rate had reached 6.0, matching the 8-year high set in April. The present jobless situation does not appear to be that serious in the Houston area, which experienced a 5.6 unemployment rate in October, down from 6.5 in June. Total non-farm employment showed no change compared to October 2000--and was up 13,400 jobs since July of this year. Compared to a year ago, significant employment gains occurred in construction, wholesale/retail trade, and government (up 20,700 jobs since July).

A major corporate center and home to 18 of the Fortune 500 companies, Houston has been designated as the best city in the U.S. to start a new business. Key to the Houston area economy is an industrial diversification which embraces oil and gas, petrochemicals, medical research, aerospace, computers, international trade, commercial fishing, finance, services, manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. The Houston business community is served by two excellent airports, extensive road, rail, and trucking systems, and the Port of Houston, the nation’s largest port in international tonnage.
