Although some economic sectors in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area currently show slight declines in employment compared to a year ago, manufacturing is holding its own and gains are occurring in construction, mining, and government. The unemployment rate in October was 5.5, down from the 7.5 in July, and slightly below the state and the nation.
Grand Rapids is one of three Michigan metro areas listed among the “Nation’s Top 50 Places to Earn and Save Money.” It also is one of the state’s SmartZone locations designed to stimulate growth and collaboration among technology-based businesses. As western Michigan’s center of commerce, transportation, and manufacturing, the Grand Rapids area has attracted such top employers as Meijer Inc., Spectrum Health, Alcoa, B.F. Goodrich, General Motors, Smith Industries Aerospace, and J.B. Laboratories Inc. Known for its furniture industry, Grand Rapids has diversified its product mix to include auto parts, machinery, hardware, plastics, home appliances, electronic equipment, food processing, and scientific instruments. By the year 2008, the area’s biggest job gains are expected in such high-tech fields as systems analysts, electronic semiconductor processors, desktop publishing specialists, computer engineers, and computer scientists. Grand Rapids is served by extensive road and rail networks and by the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
