The Detroit area’s economy continues to expand, reports the Comercia Bank. Its Business Activity Index has climbed 7 points in the past year. State officials report that 90 percent of new jobs is occurring in construction, health care, business services, engineering, information technology, and R&D (now second in the nation in spending). The auto industry has made historic gains in high-tech jobs in product, research and development, and manufacturing processes--giving rise to a new hundred-billion-dollar industry, Advanced Manufacturing Technology. More than one-third of the Detroit metro’s diversified economy now includes such “clean industries” as medical research, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, robotics, software, and computer components. Officials also expect the advent of casinos to help the economy. The area is served by excellent road, rail, air, and water transport systems.
