Economic Outlook in Columbus
In
the main, things are still looking up in the Columbus metropolitan area.
Total nonfarm employment in October of this year was up 6,100 jobs from
July. Though some industrial sectors experienced small declines, significant
12-month gains showed up in construction and government (up 4,700 jobs
since July). The area’s current unemployment rate (3.0) is well
below that of the state and the nation.
Columbus, Ohio’s capital and third
largest city, has a highly diversified economy
which insulates the area from critical economic shifts. As home to several
internationally recognized research and development organizations, the
area has shown significant growth in high-technology industries. This
growth has been supported by the Columbus Technology Council and a wide
range of business incentives. Annual entrepreneur success rates consistently
exceed 88 percent. Leading employers include Worthington Industries;
Honda of America; Kraft Foods; Goodyear; The Limited, Inc.; Nationwide;
Ohio State University, and a number of military installations. Services
and retail trade account for half the area’s jobs. There are some
300 financial institutions, four major insurance companies, and more
than 57,000 health services. The region is served by easy access to
Rickenbacker International Airport, excellent road and rail systems,
Greater Columbus Inland Port, and more than 150 million square feet
of warehouse and distribution facilities.
