Economic Outlook in
Cleveland
Compared to last year,
total nonfarm employment of 1,153,500 for Cleveland’s metropolitan
area in November was a pickup of 6,600 jobs. The area’s 6.0 unemployment
was higher than that of the state but in line with the national average.
Since a year ago, the area experienced small declines in all economic
sectors but construction and services. November employment for the three
major sectors--services, trade, manufacturing--represented 71% of total
employment for the Cleveland metro area.

As the largest economic area in Ohio,
Greater Cleveland’s employment is largely based on five major
industries--healthcare, science and engineering, biotechnology and
biomedical, education, and manufacturing. It is home to twelve companies
on Fortune’s list of top corporations, and the site of 150 global
companies. The Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the Cleveland
area include TRW, Goodyear, National City, First Energy, Eaton, Sherwin-Williams.
The region has been ranked by Fortune as the sixth best location in
North America to conduct business. The area businesses are served
by excellent road and rail systems, the Cleveland Hopkins International
Airport, the Port of Cleveland, third largest on the Great Lakes,
and the Cleveland World Trade Center, part of a global network in
more than 100 countries.
