Overall employment in the Austin metropolitan area is now holding steady. Actually, Austin employment showed the first positive growth rate since June of last year. This increase is largely in the government, financial, tourism, and personal services sectors. Manufacturing and mining experienced the biggest job loss. The Austin area’s unemployment rate was about the same as the nation’s and somewhat better than the state as a whole. Said one state employment commissioner: “For now, the trend is encouraging.”
The Austin metro is composed of five counties (Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Williamson, and Travis) which are located in two separate Workforce Development Areas. The economy of The Capital Area WDA, location of the University of Texas, is driven by education, government, tourism, and high-tech manufacturing. Total industries for the Capital Area are expected to increase by nearly 24 percent by 2008, with largest growth coming in manufacturing, services, construction, trade, and communications/utilities. The projected growth for all Rural Capital WDA industries is 22 percent during the same period, with most of the growth concentrated in construction, durable goods manufacturing, and retail trade. Austin also benefits from international trade resulting from NAFTA. The area is served by an international airport plus extensive rail and road systems.
